Mikel Arteta has admitted he felt “exposed” following an uncomfortable encounter with an Arsenal supporter while attempting to leave the Emirates Stadium by car.
Mikel Arteta Says He Felt “Exposed” After Awkward Car Incident With Arsenal Supporter
Footage circulated on social media after Arsenal’s victory over Wigan on Sunday, showing a fan standing by Arteta’s vehicle and repeatedly requesting an autograph. The Spaniard was driving with his family at the time and, due to traffic congestion, was unable to move for more than two minutes as the supporter remained at his window.
Security Protocols in Place
Arsenal’s security guidance advises players and coaching staff not to lower their car windows when exiting the Emirates area. Supporters frequently gather along the route in search of autographs, and any engagement at that point can quickly attract larger crowds, exacerbating traffic disruption and presenting safety concerns.
Responding to the incident after the match, Arteta suggested that not all requests for autographs are made with genuine intentions.
“I always try to be very respectful,” he said.
“I love to sign and take photographs as much as we can — I think it is part of our role.
“But there are certain security measures that we have to respect. And especially when certain people are doing it, they are not doing it for the right reasons.”
Arteta also referenced a previous situation involving his wife, which he claimed had been misrepresented publicly.
“The last time my wife was there, what appeared in the media was totally wrong and unfair. But that’s it.
“I prefer to speak about the incredible people who come around genuinely because they want that interaction.”
“You Don’t Feel Very Comfortable”
Although Arsenal reviewed their security arrangements several years ago and have no current plans to amend existing protocols, Arteta acknowledged that such moments can be unsettling.
“We need somebody there to protect us as well because otherwise we get exposed and you cannot move from your car,” he explained.
“You don’t feel very comfortable there. But that’s it — I take it on the chin.”
While the Arsenal manager reiterated his willingness to engage with supporters in appropriate settings, he emphasised that context and security must remain paramount.
