Former Wycombe Wanderers manager Matt Bloomfield has been dismissed by Luton Town, following a disappointing start to the League One campaign.
Matt Bloomfield Dismissed by Luton Town Following Poor Start to the Season
Bloomfield, who served the club in various capacities as a player, coach, and manager across two spells, was relieved of his duties on 6 October, just two days after the Hatters’ 2–0 away defeat to high-flying Stevenage.
He was appointed by the then Championship side in January 2025, succeeding Rob Edwards, and went on to win 12 of his 33 matches in charge, drawing seven and losing 14.
This season, Luton recorded five wins, five defeats, and one draw from their opening 11 league fixtures, following their relegation from the Championship — placing them in the same division as Wycombe Wanderers.
Alongside Bloomfield, assistant manager Richard Thomas, first-team coach Lee Harrison, and first-team analyst Ben Cirne have also departed Kenilworth Road.
In a statement, the club said:
“Matt joined the Hatters in January from Wycombe Wanderers and, despite overseeing a run of just two defeats in 11 matches leading into the final day of the 2024/25 season, was unable to prevent relegation from the Championship following defeat at West Bromwich Albion.
“Performances and results from the opening 11 matches of the current campaign in League One have fallen below the expected standards, and the Board of Directors has taken the difficult decision to relieve Matt, his assistant Richard Thomas, first-team coach Lee Harrison, and first-team analyst Ben Cirne of their duties.
“The Board wishes to thank Matt, Richard, Lee, and Ben for their efforts during a challenging period for the Club and extends its best wishes for their future careers.
“Alex Lawless, supported by Paul Benson, Kevin Foley, and Kevin Pilkington, will oversee the team on an interim basis, beginning with Tuesday night’s Vertu Trophy fixture against Cambridge United.
“With two training weeks before the next league fixture, the process of appointing a new manager is now underway. This will be led by a committee comprising members of the executive team, recruitment staff, football department, and board.
“The Club will be making no further comment at this time.”
Last season, Bloomfield guided Wycombe Wanderers to the top of the League One table after a strong start to the campaign. Despite interest from Coventry City, who had parted ways with Mark Robins in November, he opted to remain at Adams Park.
Bloomfield remained in South Buckinghamshire until January 2025, leaving after 108 matches as Wycombe manager — recording 52 wins, 24 draws, and 32 defeats. His final game in charge of the Chairboys came in the FA Cup against Portsmouth on 10 January, which Wycombe won 2–0.
