Mason Greenwood produced a sensational performance, scoring a career-best four goals as Marseille thrashed 10-man Le Havre 6–2 on Saturday to leapfrog fierce rivals Paris Saint-Germain at the top of the Ligue 1 table.
Mason Greenwood Scores Four as Ligue 1 Leaders Marseille Hit Six

The former Manchester United forward, who joined Marseille permanently in the summer of 2024, was in unstoppable form as Roberto De Zerbi’s side secured their fifth consecutive league victory.
After eight rounds, Marseille now sit one point clear of PSG, who were held to a home draw by Strasbourg on Friday night. The French giants have been in outstanding attacking form, registering 21 goals in their opening eight matches while also showing greater defensive solidity under De Zerbi.
“It was the perfect evening,” Marseille captain Leonardo Balerdi said after the match.
Le Havre had made the brighter start, taking the lead through Yassine Kechta. However, the visitors’ hopes were dealt a major blow when defender Gautier Lloris was sent off for a deliberate handball inside the penalty area. Greenwood stepped up to convert the resulting spot-kick and level the score.
The English striker then went on to add three more goals after the interval, becoming the first Marseille player to net four times in a Ligue 1 match since Jean-Pierre Papin in 1991. Greenwood, who finished last season as joint top scorer alongside Ousmane Dembélé with 21 goals, has been thriving in France, with his clinical finishing proving decisive once again.
Robinio Vaz and Amir Murillo were also on target for Marseille, while Aboulaye Touré netted Le Havre’s second with a stunning left-foot volley from outside the box into the top corner — arguably the goal of the night.
Elsewhere, Lyon missed a chance to overtake PSG after falling 3–2 away at Nice despite dominating large spells of the match. Melvin Bard opened the scoring for the hosts inside five minutes before Pavel Sulc equalised for Lyon just before the half-hour mark.
Nice reclaimed the lead through Sofiane Diop, who turned from provider to scorer, before Lyon’s Ainsley Maitland-Niles saw his penalty saved by goalkeeper Yehvann Diouf. Hicham Boudaoui extended Nice’s lead shortly after the break, and although Sulc struck again in stoppage time, it proved too little, too late.
The victory ended a five-match winless run for Nice, lifting them to eighth in the standings, four points behind Lyon.
In another fixture, U.S. international Folarin Balogun scored his second Ligue 1 goal of the season as Monaco drew 1–1 away at struggling Angers.
After a lacklustre first half with no shots on target, Balogun came off the bench in the 62nd minute. The striker was set up by a clever touch from Takumi Minamino before holding off a defender and finishing low into the net in the 72nd minute.
However, Monaco were denied all three points when 18-year-old Sidiki Cherif scored his first Ligue 1 goal four minutes from time to secure a draw for Angers.
