Fulham had to dig deep to avoid a shock exit from the EFL Cup, progressing to the quarter-finals after a dramatic penalty shootout win over League One side Wycombe Wanderers on Tuesday night.
Josh King scored his first senior goal early in the second half, cancelling out an opener from former Fulham forward Cauley Woodrow. With the scores level at full-time, the tie was decided by penalties — and it was the Premier League side who eventually prevailed.
Goalkeeper Benjamin Lecomte was Fulham’s hero, saving three spot-kicks, while Wycombe’s Will Norris made two stops before Issa Diop held his nerve to fire home the winning penalty and seal the visitors’ passage to the last eight.
Silva Concerned Over Jiménez Injury
While Silva was pleased with the final result, his joy was tempered by fresh injury concerns surrounding Raúl Jiménez, who was forced off in the 74th minute.
The Mexican international appeared to pick up a knock to his side, prompting the introduction of Jonah Kusi-Asare, the 18-year-old forward on loan from Bayern Munich, who made only his second appearance for the club.
Speaking to the media after the match, Silva confirmed that the striker would need to be assessed further.
“Raúl felt something on the side,” Silva told journalist Jack Kelly. “Let’s hope and see what happens.”
Jiménez’s setback will raise concerns among supporters, particularly as he recently missed the defeat to Bournemouth earlier in October due to a hip problem.
Injury Woes Continue for Fulham
Silva’s frustrations have been compounded by an already lengthy injury list. The Portuguese manager is currently without Joachim Andersen, Antonee Robinson, Harry Wilson, Samuel Chukwueze, Emile Smith Rowe, and Rodrigo Muniz — all of whom are sidelined through various fitness issues.
The Fulham boss admitted that his side are struggling to maintain consistency amid the growing absences but insisted the team will continue to fight through the challenging spell.
“We need players back — without that, it’s going to be more difficult,” Silva said. “We’re going to fight against this moment, for sure. We know how to do it — us, the fans, the football club. We have big battles ahead, and we have to be ready for them.”
Focus Turns to Premier League Survival
With the domestic cup hurdle cleared, Fulham now turn their attention back to Premier League duties. The Cottagers will host Wolverhampton Wanderers at Craven Cottage on Saturday, as they look to end a run of four consecutive league defeats.
Silva will be hoping for positive news on Jiménez’s fitness in the coming days, as the striker’s availability could prove crucial in Fulham’s efforts to revive their league campaign.
