The Reds produced a disciplined and resilient performance to defeat Arsenal 1–0 away from home, with Elisabeth Terland scoring the decisive goal in the first half despite United creating very little in a largely one-sided opening period.
Arsenal dominated possession and territory throughout the match, registering 21 shots and controlling 61 per cent of the ball. However, the hosts were unable to turn their superiority into goals and saw their task made more difficult when Olivia Smith was sent off in the 61st minute.
United adopted a compact and defensive set-up, with Simi Awujo added to a midfield trio of Jess Park, Hinata Miyazawa and Julia Zigiotti Olme to strengthen the shield in front of the back four. Ellen Wangerheim was handed her first start alongside Terland in attack and delivered an industrious display, contributing defensively with three recoveries and three clearances.
Wangerheim’s work rate also proved decisive at the other end. Her pressing forced a crucial error in the Arsenal defence, allowing Terland to break through and finish calmly for the game’s only goal. It was an impressive and composed moment from a forward who saw limited opportunities, but made the most of her chance.
United remained organised after the break and nearly doubled their advantage when Melvine Malard was presented with a clear opportunity, only to fire over the crossbar.
Arsenal continued to push but struggled to create clear-cut openings. Their only significant chance was comfortably dealt with by goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce, as United held firm to secure victory.
The result sees Manchester United reach a cup final for the fourth consecutive season, underlining their consistency in domestic knockout competitions.
United return to Women’s Super League action this weekend, travelling to Aston Villa on Sunday for a midday kick-off.
