Manchester City Women were crowned Women’s Super League champions for the first time since 2016 after Arsenal Women were held to a 1-1 draw by Brighton & Hove Albion Women.
Manchester City Clinch First Women’s Super League Title in a Decade After Arsenal Slip at Brighton
The result confirmed City’s title triumph and ended Arsenal’s hopes of mounting a late challenge, while also bringing an end to Chelsea Women’s remarkable run of six consecutive league titles.
Arsenal entered the encounter knowing that only victory would keep the title race alive. The North London side were also aiming to recover from their recent UEFA Women’s Champions League disappointment against Olympique Lyonnais Féminin.
However, despite battling back in the second half, Renee Slegers’ side were unable to find a decisive winner, allowing Manchester City to celebrate a historic league success in the first season under head coach Andrée Jeglertz.
Brighton Shock Arsenal Before Half-Time
Arsenal made a sluggish start at Broadfield Stadium, where a large crowd—including British athletics legend Kelly Holmes—watched the drama unfold.
The visitors created opportunities through Caitlin Foord and Alessia Russo during the opening half, but neither player was able to convert.
Brighton capitalised on Arsenal’s wastefulness in the 43rd minute when Fuka Tsunoda reacted quickest to beat Victoria Pelova to the ball before firing an effort beyond goalkeeper Daphne van Domselaar via a deflection.
The goal stunned Arsenal and handed Brighton a valuable advantage heading into the interval.
Arsenal Respond but Fail to Find Winner
Slegers responded with tactical adjustments after the break, withdrawing Pelova at half-time as Arsenal returned with renewed urgency.
Russo narrowly missed the target early in the second period before Foord forced a fine save from Chiamaka Nnadozie.
Arsenal’s persistence eventually paid off in the 62nd minute. Russo displayed excellent composure to spin away from her marker before setting up Frida Maanum, who calmly slotted into the bottom corner to level the score.
Despite the equaliser, Arsenal continued to push for the winning goal, with Slegers introducing Katie McCabe, Beth Mead and Stina Blackstenius in a triple substitution aimed at reviving the title challenge.
Former Manchester City winger Chloe Kelly was later introduced in a final attempt to produce late inspiration against her former club, but Brighton held firm to secure the draw.
City Celebrate Historic Triumph
The result ultimately proved enough to hand Manchester City the Women’s Super League crown, ending a 10-year wait for league glory and marking a major achievement for the club under Jeglertz’s leadership.
For Arsenal, the draw confirmed the end of their title ambitions after a season that promised much but ultimately fell short in both domestic and European competition.
Meanwhile, Manchester City can now celebrate a memorable campaign as they return to the summit of English women’s football.
