Kevin Danso and Tottenham Hotspur have strongly condemned the racist abuse directed at the defender on social media after his late mistake proved costly in Saturday’s draw against Brighton & Hove Albion.
Kevin Danso and Tottenham Condemn ‘Vile, Dehumanising Racism’ Following Brighton Draw
Spurs appeared to be on course for a vital victory under new head coach Roberto De Zerbi, which would have marked their first Premier League win of 2026, after Xavi Simons produced a stunning strike in the 77th minute to put them 2-1 ahead.
However, a costly lapse in concentration from Danso in stoppage time allowed Jan Paul van Hecke to dispossess him inside the penalty area, paving the way for Georginio Rutter to fire home a dramatic equaliser and deny Tottenham all three points.
The result leaves the north London side in the relegation zone, with just five matches remaining to preserve their top-flight status and avoid a first drop into the second tier in half a century.
At the final whistle, Danso was visibly distressed and required support from his teammates as the magnitude of the moment sank in.
Danso Responds to Abuse
The Austria international later addressed the situation publicly, revealing he had seen the racist messages but remained resolute in his response.
Writing on Instagram, Danso said:
“Not the result we needed yesterday. We gave everything, we learn and we move forward.
I’ve also seen the comments. Racist abuse has no place in this game or anywhere.
It does not define me, and it will not distract me from what matters. I know who I am, what I stand for, and why I play.
Now it is about staying focused, working harder, and coming back stronger. We keep pushing, we keep believing, and we give everything every time we step onto the pitch. Stronger together. On to the next.”
Tottenham Issue Strong Statement
Tottenham also released a firm statement condemning the abuse, describing it as “vile” and “dehumanising”, while confirming immediate action is being taken.
The club stated:
“Following yesterday’s fixture against Brighton, during the Premier League’s No Room For Racism campaign, Kevin Danso has been subjected to ongoing and abhorrent racist abuse on social media.
We have witnessed behaviour that is entirely unacceptable and constitutes a criminal offence. It will not be tolerated.
The club is taking immediate action by reporting all identified content to the Metropolitan Police, as well as to the relevant authorities in the countries where the perpetrators reside, and to the appropriate social media platforms.
We will pursue the strongest possible action against every individual responsible.”
Crucial Fixtures Ahead
Attention now turns to Tottenham’s remaining fixtures, beginning with a crucial trip to face bottom-placed Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux on 25 April. Further challenges await with an away match against Aston Villa, followed by a home encounter with Leeds United on 11 May.
Anything less than victory against Wolves could see the gap to safety widen further, intensifying the pressure on De Zerbi’s side as the season reaches its decisive stage.
