Ipswich Town midfielder Marcelino Núñez has been released early from Chile duty for personal reasons, allowing him to return to England ahead of the national team's final fixture of the international window.

Ipswich Town have received an unexpected boost with Marcelino Núñez returning from international duty early after being released from the Chile squad.

The Chilean Football Association confirmed that the midfielder had been released from the national-team camp for “personal reasons”, meaning he will not feature in Chile's upcoming friendly against Mexico.

Núñez had been part of Chile's squad for the North American tour and started the opening friendly against Canada before remaining an unused substitute in the subsequent defeat to the United States.

Chile Confirm Núñez Has Left The Squad

The Chilean FA issued a brief statement confirming that Núñez, who plays for Ipswich Town, had been released from the squad for personal reasons.

The federation did not provide further details about the circumstances behind his departure, meaning the official position remains limited to the wording of the statement.

Núñez therefore returns to Ipswich before Chile complete their international commitments against Mexico on October 6.

Midfielder Featured Against Canada

Núñez started Chile's first match of the international window against Canada and played 52 minutes before being substituted.

His appearance was significant because he had not been a regular starter for Chile during 2026, with Opta Analyst recording only one appearance for the national team during the year before the current window.

The Ipswich midfielder will now be able to turn his attention back towards his club responsibilities.

No Minutes Against The United States

Núñez remained on the bench during Chile's 4–2 defeat by the United States and did not enter the game.

Reports from Chile subsequently suggested that the midfielder was unhappy with his omission and that tensions developed within the national-team camp. Those reports go beyond the official explanation, however, and have not been confirmed by the Chilean FA.

The distinction is important because the federation's formal statement only cited personal reasons for his release.

Early Return Could Benefit Ipswich

From Ipswich's perspective, Núñez's early return means he has additional time to recover from the demands of international travel and prepare for the club's next fixtures.

The midfielder began the 2026/27 campaign as a starter in Ipswich's first two Premier League matches but has subsequently spent three consecutive league games on the bench, according to RotoWire. His opportunities have been affected by the arrival of Exequiel Palacios, with Palacios and Sasa Lukic occupying central midfield roles.

An early return could therefore give Núñez more time to work with Kieran McKenna and continue competing for a regular place in the Ipswich midfield.

Ipswich Will Monitor The Situation

The club will naturally want to establish that Núñez returns in good condition and is ready to resume training.

There is currently no indication from the official Chilean statement that the midfielder has suffered a new injury. His early departure is instead attributed to personal reasons.

That should allow Ipswich to assess his condition directly rather than waiting for him to complete the entire international programme.

Focus Returns To Club Football

For Núñez, the immediate priority will now be settling back into the Ipswich environment and preparing for the next phase of the domestic campaign.

The 26-year-old remains an important midfield option for McKenna, despite facing increased competition for minutes following the arrival of Palacios. His League Cup contribution earlier in the season also demonstrated his ability to influence matches, having scored twice in Ipswich's opening EFL Cup fixture.

While the circumstances surrounding his early release remain subject to differing reports, the official explanation is clear: Núñez has been permitted to leave Chile duty for personal reasons. For Ipswich, his earlier-than-expected return provides an opportunity to bring the midfielder back into the club environment and prepare him for the challenges ahead.
