Pascal Gross has called on Brighton & Hove Albion to show greater discipline in possession after they were exposed on the counter-attack in a 3-1 defeat to Newcastle United at St James’ Park.
Gross urges Brighton to improve possession control after costly Newcastle defeat
The midfielder admitted Brighton missed an important opportunity in the race for European qualification, with defensive transitions proving decisive in a match where the hosts repeatedly punished mistakes.
Newcastle threatened throughout in behind the defence, with William Osula proving a constant outlet and heading home the opening goal. Dan Burn then doubled the advantage with a glancing finish.
Gross was involved in Brighton’s response, helping to construct a well-worked move which was finished by Jack Hinshelwood to reduce the deficit and briefly lift hopes of a comeback.
However, Brighton were eventually caught out again as they committed players forward late on, conceding a third goal on the break in the closing stages.
Speaking after the match, Gross highlighted the importance of better decision-making in possession.
“They tried to play on our mistakes and hit us on the counter-attack,” he said. “It comes down to how strong our rest defence is.
“They caught us a few times, but we still had chances to get something from the game.”
He explained that Brighton must be more intelligent when deciding when to take risks with the ball.
“It’s about understanding where it is okay to lose possession and where it is too dangerous,” Gross said.
“At times we need to give our defenders and midfielders time to organise properly. If we lose the ball too quickly, it becomes very difficult to recover shape, and that suits teams with fast attackers like Newcastle.”
Despite the defeat, the midfielder felt Brighton still created enough opportunities to take something from the game.
“I still think we had enough chances to score more than one goal,” he added.
Elsewhere in the race for Europe, Brentford and AFC Bournemouth both strengthened their positions with 3-0 victories over West Ham United and Crystal Palace respectively.
Brighton now face a crucial run of fixtures, beginning with a home clash against Wolverhampton Wanderers, followed by trips to Leeds United and Manchester United.
Gross added: “We are at the stage of the season where every game matters. It still feels like a missed opportunity, because if you want to achieve something big, you have to be consistent in moments like this.”
