Former Celtic manager Ronny Deila has been dismissed by Major League Soccer side Atlanta United less than 12 months into his tenure, after a disappointing campaign that saw the club finish 14th in the Eastern Conference and miss out on the play-offs.

The Norwegian, who managed Celtic between 2014 and 2016, endured a difficult first season in charge of Atlanta, registering just one victory in his final 18 matches. The club ended the season with a record of 5 wins, 13 draws, and 16 defeats, collecting only 28 points.

Atlanta officials confirmed on Sunday that they had parted ways with the 50-year-old, admitting that supporters “deserve a better on-field product” and that expectations under the former New York City FC boss had not been met.

Expectations were high when Deila was appointed in December last year, having previously guided New York City FC to the MLS Cup in 2021. Atlanta backed him in the transfer market, notably bringing in high-profile signings such as Miguel Almirón from Premier League side Newcastle United.

However, results failed to match the optimism. Atlanta’s season concluded on Saturday night with a 1-1 draw against DC United, sealing their lowest finish in years. Club chief executive Garth Lagerwey confirmed that the search for Deila’s successor would begin immediately.

In a statement, the club said:

“It was evident that our standard of play was not met this season, and together with our senior leadership team, we have decided that it was in Atlanta United’s best interest to move the team in a different direction.

Ultimately, we owe our fans a much better on-field product and it is our unwavering commitment to provide that to this community as soon as possible.

We want to thank Ronny for his time and commitment to the organisation and wish him well in his future endeavours.”

Atlanta United enjoyed immediate success following their introduction to the MLS in 2017, reaching the play-offs in their debut season and lifting the MLS Cup the following year. However, the club have not claimed any silverware since 2019.

Supporters React on Social Media

News of Deila’s sacking drew mixed reactions online, with many fans expressing relief over the decision.

One supporter wrote on X (formerly Twitter):

“I was convinced this wasn’t going to happen. Granted, it should’ve happened months ago, but at least they aren’t standing by this joker. Now actually bring in a head coach worth his salt.”

Another added:

“About five months too late, but better late than never. Seems like a nice guy, and I wish him the best, but he was just not a good fit here.”
