Jordan strengthened their grip at the summit of Group C in the Asian Qualifiers for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 with a hard-fought victory over Iran, extending their recent dominance over Team Melli.

Having threatened the all-time single-window scoring record earlier in the campaign with a 42-point display, Jalen Harris once again proved decisive. The dynamic guard poured in 29 points, including four shots from beyond the arc, and was flawless from the free-throw line, converting all nine of his attempts.

His emphatic first-quarter dunk over Matin Aghajanpour set the tone for a performance defined by composure, athleticism and attacking efficiency.

Jordan’s Defensive Authority

While the contest remained competitive throughout, Jordan appeared largely in control, particularly on the defensive end. Iran struggled to establish rhythm against the disciplined pressure of the Jordanian backcourt and were restricted to just 25 per cent shooting from three-point range — well below their usual standards.

Jordan’s celebrated trio of Jalen Harris, Freddie Ibrahim and Ahmad Al Dwairi delivered in key moments across all four quarters, combining scoring prowess with defensive resilience.

The pivotal moment arrived with 3:30 remaining in the fourth quarter, when Harris drained a crucial three-pointer to effectively extinguish Iran’s hopes of a late comeback.

Despite forcing 18 turnovers and competing aggressively, Iran were unable to capitalise on several open scoring opportunities. Their inability to convert from range ultimately proved costly.

Iran’s Resistance Falls Short

Asia Cup 2025 All-Star guard Sina Vahedi and experienced forward Arsalan Kazemi led Iran’s resistance, battling on both ends of the floor. However, their efforts were insufficient to prevent Iran from suffering their first defeat of the qualifying campaign.

Iranian head coach Sotirios Alex Manolopoulos acknowledged the superiority of the opposition:

“Let’s be honest, Jordan played better than us. It was clear. Defensively we forced 18 turnovers, but offensively we were not making shots. We had open looks and failed to convert. With three and a half minutes left, we had our chance, but we missed it.”

Kazemi was equally candid in his assessment:

“We did not follow our game plan and the result does not surprise me.”

Jordan Eye Second Round Qualification

Jordan head coach Roy Rana praised his side’s discipline and collective spirit:

“I’m really proud of our group. Iran are one of the stronger teams in Asia, and to perform as we did here in Lebanon — especially defensively — shows our growth as a programme. Freddie led the team in rebounds, which reflects the effort and competitiveness of the squad.”

Freddie Ibrahim also highlighted the tactical preparation behind the victory:

“We knew it would be a physical contest. We prepared in detail, particularly defensively. Holding them to 25 per cent from three is significant. There are areas to improve, especially turnovers, but this was a big step forward in maintaining first place.”

With back-to-back victories over Iran dating back to the Asia Cup 2022, Jordan continue to assert themselves as one of the region’s most consistent forces. The win keeps them firmly at the top of Group C and moves them closer to securing qualification for the Second Round of the Asian Qualifiers.
