Newcastle United’s hopes of securing the signature of Marc Guehi may hinge on an extraordinary move by Crystal Palace to secure a potential replacement.
Crystal Palace Poised to Trigger Remarkable Clause in Pursuit of Marc Guehi Replacement

The Eagles have identified Japhet Tanganga—currently with South London rivals Millwall—as a top target, as they prepare for the possible departure of Guehi, who is once again attracting interest from several of the Premier League’s elite clubs.
Tanganga has spent the last 18 months at The Den, initially arriving on loan before completing a permanent transfer on a free last summer following the expiration of his contract with Tottenham Hotspur.
It has now emerged that the deal which brought him to Millwall includes a £1.2 million release clause, applicable exclusively to Premier League clubs during this summer’s transfer window.
Crystal Palace are reportedly one of four top-flight sides in contention to secure the defender at what is widely considered a bargain fee.
Sunderland, Leeds United, and Burnley are also understood to hold strong interest in the 25-year-old and are prepared to proceed once the player’s preferred destination becomes clear. However, as a stable Premier League side located in London, Palace would hold a distinct advantage should it evolve into a four-way race.
Millwall reportedly received offers for Tanganga in January—some significantly exceeding the £1.2 million clause—but opted to retain the centre-back in pursuit of an ultimately unsuccessful play-off bid, according to the Express.
Now, the club face the prospect of losing him for a relatively modest fee. It is believed Tanganga is keen to have his future resolved by the end of the month.
That timeline could directly impact Palace’s position on Guehi, who has been on the radar of top-tier clubs—including Chelsea and Newcastle United—across several transfer windows.
The England international is entering the final year of his contract at Selhurst Park and remains Newcastle’s top defensive target this summer. This comes despite last year’s drawn-out transfer saga, during which Palace chairman Steve Parish reportedly turned down three bids—reaching as high as £65 million.
Palace remain hopeful of persuading their captain to sign a new contract, particularly with European football now on the horizon following their FA Cup triumph. However, the club is also realistic about the likelihood of his departure.
Manager Oliver Glasner is reportedly eyeing Sporting Lisbon’s highly-rated centre-back Ousmane Diomande—also linked with Newcastle—as another potential replacement should Guehi leave. However, the Ivorian international is expected to command a fee in the region of £45 million, whereas Tanganga offers a more affordable alternative due to his contractual release clause.
A product of the Tottenham Hotspur academy, Tanganga was named both Millwall Supporters' Player of the Season and Players' Player of the Season in April, having made 43 appearances and scoring twice during the campaign.
Despite releasing experienced players such as Jeffrey Schlupp and Joel Ward, and returning Chelsea loanee Ben Chilwell to Stamford Bridge, Crystal Palace have yet to make a permanent signing this summer.
Securing the future of left-back Tyrick Mitchell is also on the club’s priority list. The 25-year-old’s current contract expires at the end of June, and he has been linked with a move to Serie A giants AC Milan, who are preparing for the potential exit of Theo Hernandez.
