Chelsea have confirmed the dismissal of head coach Liam Rosenior following Tuesday’s defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion, with Calum McFarlane appointed as interim manager until the end of the season.
Chelsea Dismiss Liam Rosenior After Brighton Defeat as Calum McFarlane Appointed Interim Head Coach
The decision marks another turbulent chapter in what has been a deeply disappointing campaign for the Blues. Former manager Enzo Maresca was relieved of his duties in January after a reported breakdown in relations with the club’s hierarchy, paving the way for Rosenior’s appointment.
However, the 41-year-old’s tenure has now come to an abrupt end after a run of five consecutive Premier League defeats, prompting the club to take decisive action.
In an official statement released on Wednesday, Chelsea said:
“Chelsea Football Club has today parted company with Head Coach Liam Rosenior. On behalf of everyone at Chelsea FC, we would like to place on record our gratitude to Liam and his staff for all their efforts during their time with the Club.
“Liam has always conducted himself with the highest integrity and professionalism following his appointment midway through the season.
“This has not been a decision the Club has taken lightly; however, recent results and performances have fallen below the necessary standards, with still so much to play for this season. Everyone at Chelsea FC wishes Liam every success in the future.”
The club also confirmed that McFarlane will take charge on an interim basis, beginning with this weekend’s FA Cup fixture against Leeds United.
Rosenior Departs Amid Poor Form and Declining Results
Rosenior leaves Stamford Bridge with Chelsea sitting seventh in the Premier League table on 48 points from 34 matches. With the teams below them holding games in hand, the London side could drop as low as 12th by the end of the matchweek.
Despite signing a six-year contract upon his arrival in January, Rosenior has been dismissed after overseeing just 23 matches across all competitions.
His tenure began in promising fashion, with six victories from his first seven games in charge. However, results quickly deteriorated, with only five additional wins recorded across the following 16 fixtures.
Liam Rosenior’s Chelsea Record
• Games: 23
• Wins: 11
• Draws: 2
• Losses: 10
Chelsea’s recent form has been particularly alarming. The club have suffered seven defeats and secured just one victory in their last eight matches across all competitions. In the Premier League, they have collected a mere four points from the last 27 available.
Perhaps most concerning has been their lack of attacking output. The Blues have failed to score in each of their last five league matches — their worst goalless run in the top flight since 1912.
While Rosenior publicly criticised his players following the defeat to Brighton, suggesting a lack of fight, the prolonged dip in performances ultimately left the club with little choice but to act.
Given the scale of the decline, his departure had increasingly appeared inevitable.
