Chelsea Complete Signing of Dutch Defender Jorrel Hato from Ajax

Club World Cup holders Chelsea have finalised the signing of Netherlands international Jorrel Hato from Ajax in a deal reportedly worth £37 million ($49 million).

The 19-year-old defender, who has earned six senior caps for his country, has signed a seven-year contract with the Premier League side.

Hato becomes Chelsea’s eighth signing of the summer transfer window as the Blues continue to strengthen ahead of the new campaign.

“I’m very excited,” Hato told the club’s official website.
“I thought a lot about my future and wanted to take the next step in my career. Chelsea is the best place for me to do that, so I’m very happy.”

Capable of playing as a centre-back or at left-back, Hato rose through the ranks at Ajax after joining their academy from his hometown club Sparta Rotterdam in 2018. He signed his first professional contract at the age of 16.

During his time in Amsterdam, he made 111 appearances and scored four goals for the Eredivisie side. Hato made his senior international debut in November 2023, coming on as a substitute in a 6–0 victory over Gibraltar.

Chelsea will begin their Premier League season at home to Crystal Palace on 17 August.
