Midfielder Aitana Bonmatí has rejoined Spain’s UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 squad in Switzerland after receiving treatment for viral meningitis.
Bonmatí Returns to Spain Squad Following Treatment for Viral Meningitis

The 27-year-old was absent from Spain’s recent 3–1 friendly victory over Japan in Leganés, having missed training and subsequently being admitted to hospital in Madrid for treatment.
Bonmatí, a two-time Ballon d'Or Féminin winner, was discharged from hospital on Sunday. However, she remains a doubt for Spain’s opening group match against Portugal in Bern on Thursday.
“She is so important for us, and we will wait for her, whatever happens, until the end,” said Spain head coach Montse Tomé.
The European Championship officially kicks off on Wednesday, with reigning world champions Spain widely regarded as favourites to win the tournament.
Bonmatí, who plays for FC Barcelona, has scored 30 goals in 78 appearances for her country and was a central figure in Spain’s triumphs at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup and the 2024 UEFA Nations League.
Meningitis is an infection of the protective membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. While it can be serious if left untreated, viral meningitis – the type Bonmatí suffered – is generally less severe than the rarer bacterial form. Most cases of viral meningitis improve within seven to ten days and can often be managed at home.
