Aston Villa Equal Unwanted 56-Year Record As Premier League Concerns Mount After Hull Draw

Aston Villa's goalless draw with Hull City has deepened concerns around Unai Emery's side after they failed to score in their opening three Premier League matches. The unwanted run means Villa have now matched a 56-year-old top-flight record previously set by Ipswich Town in 1969–70 and 1970–71.

Aston Villa's difficult start to the 2026–27 Premier League season continued as Unai Emery's side were held to a 0–0 draw by newly promoted Hull City at the MKM Stadium. The result gave Villa their first point of the campaign, but they remain without a single league goal after three matches.

The latest setback has also created unwanted history. Villa have become only the second team in English top-flight history to fail to score in their opening three league matches in consecutive seasons, matching Ipswich Town's achievement from 1969–70 and 1970–71.

Villa's Goal Drought Continues

The biggest concern for Emery is the lack of attacking production. Aston Villa failed to score against Brighton, Arsenal and now Hull, despite producing a much-improved performance in their latest fixture.

The statistics underline just how unusual Villa's situation has become. Having also failed to score in their first four league matches last season, they have now opened two consecutive top-flight campaigns without finding the net in their first three fixtures.

Before Villa, Ipswich were the only other top-flight side to suffer the same sequence, doing so more than half a century ago.

Villa's attacking difficulties cannot be separated from a dramatic summer of squad changes. The club lost several important players, including Ollie Watkins and Morgan Rogers, while also seeing other established figures depart.

Emery has attempted to rebuild the squad with a number of new arrivals, including Nicolas Jackson, Alejandro Garnacho and Ibrahim Mbaye. However, developing understanding between a significantly reshaped group will take time.

Hull Provide The Perfect Contrast

While Villa continue to search for their first goal, Hull's return to the Premier League has been remarkably positive. Sergej Jakirovic's side remain unbeaten after three matches and have yet to concede, collecting seven points from a possible nine.

Hull's defensive organisation frustrated Villa throughout the match, while Mohamed Belloumi even struck the crossbar as the home side threatened to claim another victory.

Pressure Begins To Mount On Emery

The result places increasing attention on Emery and his ability to find solutions quickly. Villa have previously shown under the Spaniard that they are capable of competing for European places, but their current attacking problems threaten to derail those ambitions if they continue.

The 0–0 draw was also Emery's 200th match in charge of Aston Villa, making the occasion particularly frustrating as his side failed once again to find the net.

Ultimately, one point away from home is not disastrous in isolation, but Villa's wider situation is becoming increasingly concerning. Three matches, zero goals and an unwanted record stretching back 56 years have placed Emery's side under early pressure, and the manager must now find a way to turn Villa's improved performances into goals and victories before the problems become even more difficult to solve.
