Arsenal Open To Max Dowman Loan In January After EFL Request

Arsenal are open to the possibility of sending teenage sensation Max Dowman out on loan in January if the move is considered beneficial to his development. The 16-year-old has attracted interest from EFL clubs, including Luton Town, but Mikel Arteta insists his immediate focus remains on keeping Dowman involved with Arsenal's senior squad.

Arsenal could consider a January loan move for Max Dowman as the club continues to assess the best pathway for the development of its highly rated teenage midfielder.

Dowman, who is still 16, recently returned to senior action in spectacular fashion, scoring twice and providing an assist during Arsenal's 4–2 Carabao Cup victory over Ipswich Town. Mikel Arteta has not ruled out a temporary move, but the Arsenal manager has stressed that any decision will depend on a range of factors rather than simply sending the youngster away for regular football.

Arsenal's position appears to have evolved from simply keeping Dowman within the senior squad to remaining open to a future loan if circumstances make it the right option.

Arteta said Arsenal will evaluate the teenager every six months and decide what is best for him based on his needs, the team's requirements, squad availability and the quality of the minutes he is receiving.

That leaves the door open for a January move, although there is currently no indication that Arsenal have made a final decision.

EFL Interest Adds To The Situation

Luton Town have previously shown interest in taking Dowman on loan, with manager Jack Wilshere understood to have discussed the possibility with Arteta.

Wilshere has a particularly strong connection with Dowman after previously coaching him at Arsenal's Under-18 level. Luton senior scout and club ambassador Mick Harford also confirmed that the club had explored the possibility of bringing the teenager to Kenilworth Road.

A move to the EFL could potentially provide Dowman with regular competitive football, but Arsenal would need to be satisfied that the environment and coaching structure were appropriate for such a young player.

Rules Prevent Immediate Loan Move

Dowman's age is an important part of the equation.

Premier League regulations prevent players under 17 from being sent out on loan. Dowman will turn 17 on 31 December, meaning the January transfer window would provide the first opportunity for him to make a senior loan move.

That timing explains why the January window has emerged as a natural point for Arsenal to reassess his situation.

Ipswich Performance Changes The Conversation

Dowman's recent Carabao Cup display has strengthened his case for further senior opportunities.

Against Ipswich, the teenager scored twice in Arsenal's 4–2 victory and became only the second 16-year-old to score twice in a match for a Premier League club, matching a feat previously achieved by Wayne Rooney.

Arteta described Dowman's performance as “unbelievable” and has repeatedly emphasised the importance of allowing the youngster to develop carefully rather than rushing him.

Arteta Wants Dowman To Earn His Opportunities

Arteta's message has remained consistent: Dowman's performances will determine how quickly his opportunities increase.

The Arsenal manager previously said the youngster would receive minutes but would have to earn them like every other player. Following the Ipswich performance, Arteta again stressed that the best way for Dowman to convince him is by producing on the pitch and in training.

That approach leaves open two possible development routes: increased involvement with Arsenal's first team or a carefully selected loan where he can play consistently.

Arsenal Face A Delicate Development Decision

Dowman's situation presents Arsenal with an important balancing act. The club clearly sees him as a major long-term prospect, but regular first-team football at 16 also has to be managed carefully.

Arteta himself recalled going on loan to Paris Saint-Germain at the age of 17 and noted that the success of a loan depends heavily on the environment, the coach's belief in the player and whether the youngster is actually given meaningful minutes.

For Dowman, Arsenal's decision will therefore be less about simply finding a club willing to take him and more about finding the right footballing environment.

The Door Is Open, But Nothing Is Settled

For now, Dowman's immediate future remains at Arsenal. The club wanted him involved in pre-season and within the senior squad, and Arteta has made clear that the current priority is for the teenager to continue making an impact at the Emirates.

However, with the January window arriving soon after his 17th birthday, the possibility of an EFL loan is now firmly part of the conversation. If his opportunities at Arsenal remain limited, a temporary move could become an option — but only if the club concludes that it represents the right next step in the development of one of its most closely watched young players.
