Substitute Amad Diallo struck in dramatic fashion in the 90th minute to hand Côte d’Ivoire a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Ecuador in their opening Group E fixture at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Diallo’s composed first-time finish from Wilfried Singo’s low cross secured a memorable win for the Elephants and delivered their first-ever World Cup victory against South American opposition.

The result also ended Ecuador’s impressive 19-match unbeaten run and moved Côte d’Ivoire level on points with Germany following the European side’s emphatic victory over Curaçao earlier in the day.

Diallo Delivers as Ivory Coast Find Late Breakthrough

For much of the contest, Côte d’Ivoire looked the more composed and adventurous side in possession but appeared increasingly likely to be frustrated by Ecuador’s disciplined defensive structure.

That changed in the closing moments.

Singo surged forward from right-back and delivered a dangerous ball into the penalty area where Diallo arrived perfectly to guide his finish into the bottom corner and spark celebrations among the West African supporters.

The goal completed an encouraging performance from a youthful Ivorian side competing at their first World Cup finals since 2014.

Diomande Impresses in Breakout Performance

One of the standout performers of the evening was 19-year-old Yan Diomande, whose direct running and attacking intent repeatedly caused Ecuador problems.

Diomande consistently threatened down the flank and nearly created the opening goal in the first half.

In the 35th minute, he collected possession deep inside his own half, accelerated past Piero Hincapié and delivered a dangerous cross into the path of Nicolas Pépé. However, the winger was unable to convert after taking an additional touch inside the area.

The teenager remained influential after the break.

Shortly after moving across to the left wing, Diomande produced another eye-catching run, weaving past multiple Ecuador defenders before firing over the crossbar.

Ecuador Miss Chances Despite Strong Support

Ecuador had opportunities of their own and may feel disappointed not to have taken the lead during the opening half.

John Yeboah and Alan Minda both struck the crossbar within the space of seven minutes as Côte d’Ivoire’s defence showed moments of vulnerability.

After the interval, Gonzalo Plata produced Ecuador’s clearest effort, forcing goalkeeper Yahia Fofana into a controlled save.

However, Ecuador struggled to maintain attacking pressure during the closing stages.

Despite enjoying strong support from fans in a region home to a large Ecuadorian community, La Tricolor were unable to find the decisive moment.

Dream Start for the Elephants

Côte d’Ivoire entered the tournament with the youngest squad in the competition and delivered a performance that combined energy, composure and growing confidence.

While Ecuador created chances and remained competitive throughout, the Elephants showed patience and resilience before Diallo’s late intervention secured all three points.

It was a memorable opening night for Côte d’Ivoire — and an early statement that this emerging side could become one of the tournament’s most exciting teams to watch.
