Foden received a straight red card in the 23rd minute after kicking out at Fernandes, leaving City with 10 men for more than an hour. However, replays showed Fernandes had also made contact with Foden while the City midfielder was on the ground, prompting a heated debate over whether the Manchester United captain should have been punished as well.

Shearer Calls Fernandes' Reaction Pathetic

Shearer did not hold back when discussing the incident on The Rest Is Football.

The former England striker criticised the manner in which Fernandes reacted to the contact and argued that the United captain played a significant part in Foden's dismissal.

Shearer said he believed Fernandes had also kicked Foden and therefore should not have escaped punishment simply because Foden's reaction came afterwards.

Foden Was The Only Player Sent Off

Referee Michael Oliver showed Foden a straight red card in the 23rd minute, meaning Manchester City were forced to play with 10 men for the majority of the contest.

Fernandes, however, remained on the pitch and was not shown a card for his part in the confrontation.

Shearer believes that decision created an imbalance in the punishment handed out to the two players. In his view, either both should have been sent off or neither should have received a red card.

Shearer Wants Equal Punishment

The Premier League legend's argument is centred on consistency.

According to Shearer, if Foden's reaction was serious enough to warrant a dismissal, Fernandes' earlier involvement should also have been considered when officials assessed the incident.

His view was particularly critical because Fernandes appeared to react dramatically after the contact, contributing to the sequence that eventually ended with Foden being dismissed.

United Failed To Capitalise On The Extra Man

The controversy became even more significant because Manchester United failed to take advantage of City's numerical disadvantage.

City played with 10 men for most of the match but still secured a 1–0 victory at Old Trafford, with Erling Haaland scoring the decisive goal in the second half.

United also hit the woodwork through Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo but could not find an equaliser. The result left Michael Carrick's side with only four points from their opening four Premier League matches.

Haaland Goal Adds To The Controversy

Haaland's winning goal was initially ruled out for offside before VAR overturned the decision. The refereeing authorities later acknowledged that the goal should not have stood because Enzo Fernández, who was in an offside position, interfered with the play.
