Steven Gerrard believes Arsenal can defeat Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League final, insisting the underdog tag could work in the Premier League side’s favour.

PSG secured their place in the final after edging past Bayern Munich 6-5 on aggregate following a dramatic semi-final encounter. A 1-1 draw in the second leg on Wednesday night proved enough for Luis Enrique’s side to progress after their thrilling first-leg victory in Paris.

The French champions will now meet Arsenal in Budapest on 30 May as they attempt to retain the Champions League title.

For Arsenal, the occasion represents a historic opportunity. The North London club are still searching for their first-ever Champions League triumph, with their only previous final appearance ending in defeat to Barcelona in 2006.

‘Being Underdogs Could Suit Arsenal’

Speaking on TNT Sports, Gerrard suggested Arsenal should embrace their status as outsiders and use their physical strengths to unsettle PSG.

“I know better than most that underdogs can win finals,” Gerrard said, referencing Liverpool’s famous Champions League triumph over AC Milan in 2005.

“Arsenal are coming up against a top-quality side managed by an elite coach, so they will need every player performing at the highest level.

“But they absolutely have a chance. In fact, being the underdogs might actually suit this Arsenal team.”

Gerrard also believes Arsenal’s Premier League title challenge could provide additional confidence heading into the final.

“If they manage to win the league, that momentum and belief could be huge for them,” he added.

Physicality and Set-Pieces Key for Arsenal

According to Gerrard, Arsenal must use their physical presence and aerial strength to disrupt PSG’s rhythm.

“They need to make every set-piece count, use their size and physicality, and force PSG into uncomfortable situations,” he explained. “They have to take PSG to places they don’t want to go.”

The former England captain also praised PSG’s semi-final performance against Bayern Munich, describing the French side’s defensive display in the second leg as outstanding.

“Across both matches, PSG deserved to go through,” Gerrard said. “The first leg was chaotic and open, but in the second leg they showed defensive discipline and control.

“Bayern Munich and Vincent Kompany contributed to a brilliant tie, but PSG just had the edge.”

Owen Hargreaves Also Backs Arsenal’s Chances

Former England midfielder Owen Hargreaves also believes Arsenal are capable of causing an upset in the final.

Hargreaves highlighted Arsenal’s defensive solidity and midfield balance as major strengths heading into the showdown in Hungary.

“With their defence, their goalkeeper, and Declan Rice sitting deeper in midfield, Arsenal definitely have a chance in a one-off match,” he said.

However, he warned that PSG possess numerous attacking threats capable of deciding the contest.

“This PSG side can hurt you in so many different ways,” Hargreaves added. “But this Arsenal team is different now. They’ve regained belief after a difficult spell, and they’re going into the final with confidence.”

A Highly Anticipated European Final

The final in Budapest is shaping up to be one of the most eagerly awaited European contests in recent years, with PSG aiming to continue their dominance on the continental stage while Arsenal seek to make history under Mikel Arteta.

For both clubs, the match represents the culmination of impressive campaigns and an opportunity to cement their place among Europe’s elite.
