Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick lavished praise on Lamine Yamal and Marc Bernal following his side’s Champions League victory over FC Copenhagen on Wednesday, a result that confirmed a top-eight finish and automatic qualification for the knockout stages.
Flick Praises Yamal and Bernal After Barcelona Secure Top-Eight Finish
Yamal once again played a decisive role, scoring and providing an assist as Barcelona sealed the win. While the teenager’s attacking output stood out, Flick was keen to highlight his continued improvement away from the ball.
“He has had to adapt because opponents now mark him with one, two, or even three players,” Flick told reporters. “He’s doing very well. His speed for the first goal was incredible, he delivered an important pass and then scored himself.
“Not only in attack, he has improved a lot defensively. I remember one recovery that was very important for us. He has been excellent and I’m very happy. He has fantastic quality, holds the ball well in every direct duel, and that is very important for the team.”
Flick also reserved strong praise for Bernal, who replaced Eric García at half-time and impressed in midfield during the second half.
“Marc played a fantastic game, and we see this level in training all the time,” Flick said. “He has the potential to improve even further. We all know he is a top-quality footballer.
“He has great technique, controls the game well, protects the ball and passes effectively. He had an excellent second half, although he still needs to improve physically. He suffered a very serious injury, and coming back from that is always difficult.”
Bernal’s assured performance in the final 45 minutes will strengthen his case for increased involvement during the second half of the season as Barcelona continue to compete on multiple fronts.
