Chelsea appeared to mock Arsenal on social media moments after their London rivals suffered a painful UEFA Champions League final defeat to Paris Saint-Germain on penalties in Budapest.
Chelsea Take Swipe at Arsenal Following Champions League Final Heartbreak
The Gunners were denied their first-ever Champions League title after losing 4-3 in a dramatic penalty shootout, following a 1-1 draw after extra time.
Paris Saint-Germain retained the European crown after Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhães missed the decisive penalty, sending his effort high over the crossbar and handing the trophy to the French champions.
Chelsea's Social Media Post Sparks Reaction
Shortly after Arsenal's defeat was confirmed, Chelsea published a post on social media that many supporters interpreted as a thinly veiled dig at their London rivals.
The Blues wrote:
"Come and visit London's Home of Trophies. Book your Stadium Tour at Stamford Bridge now."
The post was accompanied by images of Chelsea's replica UEFA Champions League and FIFA Club World Cup trophies, along with photographs of banners inside Stamford Bridge bearing slogans such as "London's Finest" and "Pride of London".
The timing of the post quickly attracted widespread attention across social media platforms.
Chelsea supporters embraced the message, using the opportunity to highlight the club's European pedigree, having lifted the Champions League trophy in both 2012 and 2021.
Meanwhile, Arsenal fans were quick to respond by pointing to the club's recent Premier League triumph, which saw Mikel Arteta's side crowned English champions for the first time in more than two decades.
Arsenal's European Dream Ends in Agony
The final itself proved a heartbreaking occasion for Arsenal.
Kai Havertz, a former Chelsea forward, gave the Gunners a dream start by opening the scoring in the sixth minute.
However, Paris Saint-Germain fought back and levelled the contest through an Ousmane Dembélé penalty during the second half.
Neither side could find a winner during extra time, sending the final to a penalty shootout.
Although goalkeeper David Raya produced an important save to deny Nuno Mendes, Arsenal's hopes were damaged when Eberechi Eze fired his penalty wide before Gabriel's miss ultimately sealed defeat.
The result condemned Arsenal to a second Champions League final loss, having previously been beaten by Barcelona in the 2006 final.
Rice Proud Despite Final Defeat
Midfielder Declan Rice expressed his disappointment after the match but insisted the squad could still reflect positively on an outstanding season.
"It's gutting," Rice said.
"It's devastating to lose a Champions League final on penalties. But we've had an incredible season and gave absolutely everything.
"Penalty shootouts can be a lottery and that's football. Some of the greatest teams in history have lost finals on penalties.
"We win together and we lose together. I'm incredibly proud of this group and what we've achieved.
"Of course I'm disappointed, but it has been an amazing journey and we'll come back stronger."
Arteta Thanks Players and Supporters
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta also spoke of his pride in the team despite the painful nature of the defeat.
"It's very difficult to accept when you've been so consistent throughout the competition and then lose on penalties," Arteta said.
Addressing his players and coaching staff, he added:
"No matter how many times I say thank you, it wouldn't be enough. The appreciation isn't only for what we've achieved, but for the commitment, effort and joy we've shared every day throughout the season."
Arteta was also asked about Arsenal's appeals for a penalty after Noni Madueke went down inside the area during the match.
"If, if, if," he replied.
"That wasn't what happened. We have to focus on ourselves, improve where we can and find those small margins that make the difference."
Arsenal's Search for European Glory Continues
Despite their domestic success, Arsenal's wait for a first European Cup triumph continues.
The North London club remains the team to have played the most matches in European Cup and UEFA Champions League history without lifting the trophy.
While the defeat will undoubtedly leave a sense of regret, Arsenal's Premier League title success and run to the Champions League final represent significant progress under Arteta, with supporters hopeful that European glory will eventually follow.
