United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres met Arab League Secretary General Nabil Fahmy in Cairo, Egypt, on Sunday to discuss regional conflicts, promote peace through dialogue and strengthen cooperation between the two organisations.
The meeting focused on regional developments and ways the UN and Arab League could work together to support stability and sustainable development across the Arab region.

DIPLOMACY AIMED AT REDUCING REGIONAL TENSIONS

Guterres arrived in Cairo on Saturday for diplomatic consultations aimed at reducing tensions between the United States and Iran and encouraging a peaceful resolution through negotiations.
He said his message was centred on preventing the conflict from spreading, protecting civilians and creating conditions for diplomacy to succeed.
The UN chief also warned that growing conflicts were increasing human suffering and widening inequalities around the world. His appeal reflects concerns that prolonged wars can destabilise neighbouring countries, disrupt international trade and worsen humanitarian emergencies.

GAZA AND SUDAN HUMANITARIAN CRISES

During his visit, Guterres met with the UN country team in Egypt and regional directors to discuss the organisation’s work with the Egyptian government and support for people affected by the crises in Gaza and Sudan.
Egypt has received Palestinians seeking medical treatment and other assistance following Israel’s war in Gaza, which began in October 2023. It has also become a major destination for Sudanese fleeing the war that started in April 2023.
Egyptian government estimates cited in a 2025 UNICEF report indicated that more than 1.2 million Sudanese had arrived since the conflict began. The country was also home to an estimated five million Sudanese residents before the war.
These arrivals have increased the demand for housing, healthcare, education and other essential services. The number of Palestinians who have entered Egypt has not been officially established.

WHY UN AND ARAB LEAGUE COOPERATION MATTERS

The United Nations works on international peace, humanitarian assistance and cooperation among countries, while the Arab League brings Arab states together to address shared regional concerns.
Cooperation between the two organisations can support diplomatic efforts, humanitarian relief and discussions on security challenges affecting the region. Their engagement is particularly important as conflicts threaten civilians, regional stability, energy supplies and international shipping routes.
Guterres and Fahmy also met during the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York last month. Their discussions included the effects of rising regional tensions on Arab security, international shipping, energy security and global trade.

DIPLOMATIC EFFORTS FACE MAJOR CHALLENGES

The Cairo discussions form part of wider efforts to contain regional conflicts and encourage political solutions. However, diplomatic appeals must be followed by cooperation among the parties involved if they are to produce lasting results.
Protecting civilians, maintaining humanitarian access and preventing further escalation remain central challenges. The UN and Arab League will continue to face pressure to support dialogue while addressing the immediate needs of people affected by the conflicts.
