Dua Lipa has launched legal action against Samsung Electronics, seeking at least $15 million (£11 million) in damages over allegations the company used her image without permission to promote its television products.
Dua Lipa Files $15 Million Lawsuit Against Samsung Over Alleged Unauthorised Use of Her Image
The lawsuit, filed last Friday in a federal court in California, accuses the technology giant of featuring a copyrighted image of the global pop star on packaging for television sets sold at retail outlets.
According to court documents, the alleged use of the image falsely suggested that the singer had endorsed Samsung’s products, potentially influencing customers’ purchasing decisions.
Image Allegedly Used on Television Packaging
The disputed photograph is reportedly titled “Dua Lipa – Backstage at Austin City Limits, 2024”, with the lawsuit stating that the singer owns all rights and interests connected to the image.
Lawyers representing the Grammy-winning artist claim Samsung displayed the photograph prominently on cardboard television packaging, allowing the company to benefit commercially from what consumers may have interpreted as an official endorsement.
The legal filing also includes allegations of copyright infringement, trademark infringement and violations of publicity rights.
Social Media Posts Included in Court Filing
Lipa’s legal team attached screenshots of social media posts and online comments to the filing in an effort to demonstrate the commercial impact of the alleged unauthorised use.
One comment cited in the lawsuit reportedly showed a fan stating they would purchase the television “just because Dua is on it”.
Her lawyers argue that the use of her likeness created the false impression that the singer approved of or supported Samsung’s products.
The filing further claims the alleged infringement has damaged Lipa’s commercial image and diluted her brand identity.
Singer Allegedly Raised Concerns Last Year
According to the lawsuit, the singer first became aware of the alleged use of her image in June last year and subsequently demanded that Samsung cease using the photograph.
Her legal representatives claim the company repeatedly refused to comply with those requests.
Samsung has declined to comment publicly on the case.
A spokesperson for the company stated it could not discuss matters relating to ongoing litigation.
Representatives for Lipa had not issued any additional public statement regarding the lawsuit at the time of reporting.
Global Pop Star Continues Worldwide Success
Lipa remains one of the world’s most commercially successful music artists, having achieved international acclaim through chart-topping songs including Levitating, Don't Start Now and Future Nostalgia.
The singer has built a major global brand through music, fashion partnerships and international touring, making the protection of her image rights commercially significant.
