Nearly 30 Years On, Tupac Shakur Murder Case Finally Goes To Trial

Former gang leader Duane “Keffe D” Davis is set to stand trial nearly 30 years after the killing of rap icon Tupac Shakur in Las Vegas. Nearly three decades after the killing of rap legend Tupac Shakur, the man charged in connection with his death is finally set to face trial in Las Vegas.
Duane “Keffe D” Davis, 63, faces one count of murder with a deadly weapon, with an additional allegation that the killing was carried out to promote, further or assist a criminal gang.
Davis, a former leader of the South Side Compton Crips, was arrested in 2023 and has pleaded not guilty.
The trial is expected to last about a month, with jury selection beginning Monday and likely taking several days before opening statements and witness testimony begin.

THE NIGHT TUPAC WAS SHOT

Tupac Shakur, also known as 2Pac and Makaveli, was shot on September 7, 1996, in Las Vegas.
The 25-year-old rapper was travelling in a black BMW with music executive Marion “Suge” Knight after attending a boxing event. They were heading towards Club 662, where Shakur was scheduled to perform, when a white Cadillac pulled alongside their vehicle.
Gunfire suddenly erupted.
Shakur, who was sitting in the passenger seat, was struck several times. Knight was also injured but survived.
Shakur was taken to hospital, where he died six days later from his injuries.
His death became one of the most enduring unsolved mysteries in popular music.

WHY THE CASE REMAINED COLD

For years, investigators struggled to bring charges in the case.
The lack of a prosecution allowed numerous theories about Shakur's death to circulate, including speculation about rivalries within the hip-hop world and conflicts involving street gangs.
The investigation was revived years later after Davis made public comments about the shooting and discussed his knowledge of the events in a memoir.
Authorities eventually obtained a search warrant in 2023 and arrested Davis, who has consistently denied the murder charge in court.

DAVIS IS NOT ACCUSED OF PULLING THE TRIGGER

One of the most important aspects of the trial is that prosecutors are not claiming Davis personally fired the shots that killed Shakur.
Instead, prosecutors are expected to argue that Davis played a central role in organising the attack and that he helped provide the firearm used in the shooting.

Prosecutors are expected to call between 35 and 45 witnesses during the proceedings.
The witnesses could include people who saw Shakur shortly before the shooting, individuals connected to Davis and people who were part of the rapper's wider social and professional circles at the time.
Their testimony is expected to examine the events leading up to the shooting, what happened immediately afterwards and Davis' alleged involvement.

THE TRIAL MAY NOT SOLVE EVERY MYSTERY

Although the case could reveal new details about one of the most famous killings in music history, the trial may not definitively identify the person who pulled the trigger.
Prosecutors' case is focused primarily on Davis' alleged role in facilitating and organising the killing.
That means the proceedings could establish legal responsibility without answering every question that has surrounded Shakur's death since 1996.

A LONG-AWAITED MOMENT FOR HIP-HOP

Tupac Shakur remains one of the most influential figures in hip-hop history, with his music continuing to attract millions of listeners decades after his death.
