The winner of the World Rugby Player of the Year Award will be announced on Sunday in Monaco.
South African Trio Up for World Rugby Player of the Year Award
Three members of South Africa's World Cup-winning team—Cheslin Kolbe, Eben Etzebeth, and Pieter-Steph du Toit—have been shortlisted for World Rugby's Player of the Year award. Meanwhile, Antoine Dupont is a contender for the Sevens Player of the Year award, set to be announced on Monday.
Springbok prop Du Toit, who won the prestigious trophy in 2019, is in the running to claim the award for a second time. Kolbe and Etzebeth are also part of the squad that successfully defended their World Cup title last year. Ireland's captain, Caelan Doris, rounds out the list of nominees for the top men’s award.
Dupont, the 2021 World Player of the Year, missed France's 2024 Six Nations campaign to focus on the shorter form of rugby, securing gold at the Paris Olympics. He returned to the 15-a-side team earlier this month and is now one of three players vying for the Sevens Player of the Year award, alongside his French teammate Aaron Grandidier Nkanang and Ireland’s Terry Kennedy.
In the Rising Star category, New Zealand’s Wallace Sititi, the son of former Samoa captain Semo, is among the four nominees for Men's Breakthrough Player of the Year. Sititi drew comparisons to Ardie Savea, the current World Rugby Player of the Year, following his standout performance in the All Blacks’ narrow 24-22 victory over England two weeks ago. Also nominated for the breakthrough award are England's Immanuel Feyi-Waboso, South Africa’s Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, and Ireland’s Jamie Osborne.
In the women's category, the nominees for the 15s Player of the Year include England’s Ellie Kildunne and Alex Matthews, France’s scrum-half Pauline Bourdon Sansus, and Canada’s Alex Tessier.
