Chelsea may have just been given the go-ahead to proceed with their plans to sign Napoli striker Victor Osimhen on transfer deadline day, as Saudi Pro League club Al-Ahli have shifted their focus to Brentford's Ivan Toney instead.
Chelsea Given Go-Ahead for Victor Osimhen Transfer as 'Issues' Complicate Saudi Deal
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reports that due to 'issues' that have emerged in the negotiations between Osimhen and the Middle Eastern side, they have decided to pursue Toney. It is unlikely that they will secure the signatures of both Toney and Osimhen on Friday.
Al-Ahli are now working on the paperwork to finalise a deal for Toney after agreeing on a £35 million fee with Thomas Frank's side earlier in the day.
Toney has completed part of his medical in London and is expected to travel to Saudi Arabia to finalise his high-profile move. The club is keen to partner him with former Liverpool star Roberto Firmino in their attack.
Many clubs in the Saudi top flight believe that Al-Ahli cannot afford to sign both Toney and Osimhen, especially given the league's regulations regarding the number of foreign players each team is permitted, thereby opening the door for Chelsea to pursue their Nigerian target.
Chelsea are now thought to be the only club in the race to sign Osimhen, with Al-Ahli and Paris Saint-Germain turning their attention elsewhere. Napoli, managed by Antonio Conte, have already moved on with Romelu Lukaku as Osimhen's replacement.
Meanwhile, French outlet L'Équipe claims that Osimhen is becoming 'very angry' with Napoli for not having already reached an agreement with Chelsea, with all parties hoping to secure a last-minute deal.
Osimhen is keen to move to Stamford Bridge but is concerned that he might not be able to fly to London on Friday, as the two clubs remain in discussions.
It also remains uncertain whether he is willing to accept Chelsea's newly revised wage structure, which offers players higher salaries based on the club's performance over the duration of their contract.
Osimhen is Napoli's highest earner and had received a substantial contract offer from Saudi Arabia. However, although he would earn considerably less at Chelsea, he would have the opportunity to play in the Premier League, and crucially, his options are becoming limited.
Despite Osimhen giving the go-ahead for a move that could cost upwards of £60 million, Chelsea still have negotiations to complete with his club, and there are only a few hours left before the transfer window closes until January.
