Emma Anderson, the English songwriter who played a pivotal role in Lush, a seminal band that navigated the fringes of shoegaze and Britpop without fully embracing either genre, remains a compelling force in music. She recently teamed up with Sonic Cathedral for her acclaimed solo album.
Emma Anderson and Julia Holter Collaborate on 'Taste The Air'
The album track 'Taste The Air' quickly became a favourite and caught the attention of fellow songwriter Julia Holter. After some conversations, this new mix sees Holter offering a deconstructive approach to the original, infusing it with fresh nuances.
“I love Emma’s voice and the dreamy atmosphere of ‘Taste The Air’,” says Julia, whose own studio album ‘Something in the Room She Moves’ was released earlier this year to widespread acclaim. “It was so enjoyable to counterpoint the mesmerising vocal layers with rhythmic elements. I was honoured to fly through the clouds.”
Emma is equally delighted with this alternative interpretation of her work. “This mix is essentially a complete deconstruction,” she explains. “It alludes to the original track, but the elements are replaced by playful piano and stabs of strings and keys. Most notably, there is an abundance of space!”
“I was absolutely thrilled when Julia agreed to do a mix as I’ve been a fan since her 2015 album ‘Have You In My Wilderness’ and was fortunate enough to see her perform live the following year at La Route du Rock in Saint-Malo, France, when Lush also performed. Everyone who has heard this mix has been utterly captivated by it. Hopefully, you will be too.”
