Poland: Furious Farmers Rally Against EU Climate Policies

Polish farmers staged a protest against the EU's Green Deal, which aims to achieve climate neutrality within the bloc by 2050. Politicians from the former nationalist government also rallied alongside the demonstrators.

Several thousand farmers, many clad in yellow vests, alongside other protesters, marched through the Polish capital, Warsaw, on Friday to denounce EU climate regulations they argue are jeopardising their livelihoods.

The demonstration, themed "Down with the Green Deal," was organised by Solidarity, a farmers' trade union staunchly opposed to the EU's climate-centric agricultural policies.

Solidarity contends that the EU's European Green Deal imposes constraints that impede their operations and inflate costs.

One banner bore the slogan "Let Brussels eat worms, we prefer pork chops and potatoes," reflecting a prevalent belief that the EU may advocate consuming insects and worms over livestock meat, the rearing of which emits significant greenhouse gases.

Certain demonstrators also criticised the importation of Ukrainian agricultural products, which they claim is diminishing their earnings, while others more broadly condemned the policies of the current pro-EU coalition government led by Prime Minister Donald Tusk.
