A man armed with a sword assaulted members of the public and two police officers in East London, resulting in five people being hospitalized. Shortly afterward, police confirmed the arrest of a suspect and assured the public that there were no other individuals believed to be at large.

In north-east London, a man has been apprehended following an incident where multiple individuals, including two police officers, were stabbed during a car and sword attack. Five injured individuals received treatment at the scene in Hainault before being transported to the hospital.

Witnesses recounted observing the suspect wielding a sword as he fled through the area, ultimately being subdued by police with a Taser. Eyewitnesses reported attempts by a group to confront the assailant, while another heard a woman's distressing scream.

Video footage circulated on social media depicted a man brandishing a lengthy knife in Laing Close.

According to the Metropolitan Police, an incident occurred in Hainault where a vehicle was driven into a house, followed by reports of people being stabbed shortly before 07:00 BST.

"We understand the suspect went on to attack other members of the public and two police officers," stated the force.

A 36-year-old man is currently in custody following the incident where the car was driven into a property in the Thurlow Gardens area.

"We are awaiting an update on the condition of those injured," added the police.

The London Ambulance Service stated that it treated five people at the scene before transporting them to the hospital.

Hainault London Underground station is closed, according to Transport for London (TfL), and local buses are being diverted.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Ade Adelekan expressed, "This must have been a terrifying incident for those concerned. I know the wider community will be feeling shock and alarm."

He added, "People will want to know what has happened, and we will provide more information as soon as we can."

The police further clarified that the incident did not appear to be terror-related, and officers were not seeking other suspects.

"We do not believe there is any ongoing threat to the wider community," a spokesperson said.

An eyewitness recounted observing what appeared to be a stand-off between police and the suspect in an alleyway before hearing a woman scream.

The man, who preferred not to disclose his name, stated, "I also heard the words 'he's got a massive knife', or 'he's got a massive sword'."

He described how police "went into the alley, and there seemed to be some sort of a stand-off there where I heard this huge commotion, then I heard a scream."

"I heard a woman scream and then some sort of sobbing sounds."

"I then heard a voice say something like 'she's been stabbed in the face', or 'we need assistance', you know, calling for medical back-up."

Another eyewitness, Chris, who resides in Thurlow Gardens, recounted seeing the suspect run through the area.

"He ran through the gardens and came out onto the street by the house next door to me," he shared with BBC Radio 5 Live.

The police were present. He then ran down to two doors down and tried to ascend the scaffold. They Tasered him, took him down, and he had a large samurai sword.

"Like a big sword, like a Japanese-looking sword. It wasn't a small knife.

"I saw it all from my bedroom window."

Manpreet Singh, who also witnessed the attack, recounted to BBC Radio 5 Live that he had stepped out of an office when he "heard chaos" on the other side of the road.

"I saw a group of people, five or six of them, trying to fight off a guy - he had a sword in his hand," he said.

"There were about seven or eight police cars entering that road, and after another 10 minutes, I saw the guy running towards the station and entering the road opposite the station.

"He tried to get into one of the houses but couldn't get into it, and that's when they Tasered him."

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan expressed being "absolutely devastated" by the incident.

"The police and emergency services showed the best of our city - running towards danger to protect others and I thank them from the bottom of my heart," he stated in a statement.

Wes Streeting, MP for Ilford North, extended gratitude to the "heroic" police officers "who put themselves in harm's way" in response to the "horrific incident". "My prayers are with those who've been injured and their loved ones," he said. "I know there will be widespread fear and alarm in our community.

"I am liaising closely with the police, the Mayor of London, and the London Borough of Redbridge and will keep local residents updated."
