Eric Chelle's most recent role at the international level was as head coach of Mali, a position he held for two years. During his tenure, he led the team to the quarter-finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Nigeria has appointed Eric Chelle as their new head coach, entrusting him with the task of revitalizing the nation’s aspirations to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.

Chelle, aged 47, previously served as Mali's head coach for two years, leading the team to the quarter-finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. Mali narrowly missed advancing further after losing to host nation Côte d'Ivoire in a penalty shootout.

Born in Abidjan, the former center-back represented Mali in five international matches. His club career was primarily based in France, with notable stints at clubs such as Lens.

According to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), "His appointment is with immediate effect, and he has the responsibility of guiding the Super Eagles to earn a ticket to the 2026 FIFA World Cup finals."

Nigeria’s World Cup qualifying journey will resume in March when they travel to face Rwanda before hosting Zimbabwe.

The Super Eagles currently sit in a precarious position, with only three points from their first four matches in Group C. They trail Rwanda, South Africa, and Benin, who each have seven points.

In the qualification format, the top team in each of the nine groups earns automatic qualification to the 2026 finals in North America. The four best runners-up will participate in continental play-offs, with a chance to secure one additional spot.
