Tom Hicks, the Texan businessman and philanthropist who once held ownership stakes in two major Dallas sports teams as well as an English Premier League club, has died at the age of 79.

According to spokesperson Lisa LeMaster, Hicks passed away peacefully on Saturday in Dallas, surrounded by his family.

Hicks was the owner of the NHL’s Dallas Stars from 1995 until 2011, during which time the team famously lifted the Stanley Cup in 1999. He later became the owner of Major League Baseball’s Texas Rangers between 1998 and 2010, overseeing three American West Division titles and guiding the side to a World Series appearance. In 2007, he also secured a 50 per cent share in Liverpool Football Club.

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones paid tribute, remarking that his relationship with Hicks “was always about far more than stadiums and sport” and was grounded in “mutual respect, trust, and genuine friendship”. He added that he would “miss him deeply” and extended condolences to the Hicks family.

Beyond sport, Hicks left a significant mark on the business world. He co-founded Hicks & Haas in 1984, becoming an influential figure in the evolution of private equity investment. His expertise later earned him a place on the board of regents at the University of Texas, a role he held from 1994 to 1999.

Fellow businessman Ross Perot Jr. described Hicks as “a visionary in business and a trailblazer in private equity”, noting how he seamlessly combined his passion for sport and enterprise through his ownership of the Stars and Rangers.

Hicks is survived by his wife of 35 years, Cinda Cree Hicks, and six children: Thomas Ollis Hicks Jr., Mack Hardin Hicks, John Alexander Hicks, Robert Bradley Hicks, William Cree Hicks and Catherine Forgrave Hicks.

In a heartfelt joint statement, his children reflected on his enduring role within their lives:

“Of all his achievements, the title he valued most was ‘Dad’. Through every challenge that came his way, he remained unwavering in his generosity, devotion and love for us. His guidance continues to shape our family, and we are honoured to uphold his legacy. Although his passing leaves us heartbroken, we remain profoundly grateful to have been his children.”
