Barcelona may have already secured the La Liga title, but Hansi Flick was left far from satisfied after watching his side end the season with a disappointing 3-1 defeat to Valencia at Mestalla.
Hansi Flick Sends Strong Message After Barcelona’s Final-Day Defeat to Valencia
The Blaugrana had wrapped up the championship before the final round of fixtures, finishing the campaign on an impressive 94 points. However, Flick had hoped his players would close out the season with a stronger performance, particularly on an emotional evening that also marked Robert Lewandowski’s final appearance for the club.
Instead, Barcelona produced an unconvincing display as Valencia capitalised on defensive mistakes to deservedly claim victory in front of their home supporters.
Flick Frustrated by Barcelona’s Performance
Speaking after the match, the German coach did not hide his disappointment with what he described as an unacceptable lack of concentration from his side.
“We made simple mistakes and they took advantage of them,” Flick said.
“Valencia fully deserved the victory. We were not 100 per cent focused, and they showed greater hunger than us.”
Despite the frustrating defeat, Flick insisted the result would not overshadow what has ultimately been a highly successful campaign for Barcelona.
“That does not change the fact that we have had a very good season,” he explained.
“Of course I am disappointed because the performance was not good enough, but it is important to analyse matches like this properly.”
The Barcelona manager also pointed towards the mentality shown by his squad in recent weeks as the standard he expects moving forward.
“In recent matches we kept clean sheets and approached games with seriousness and discipline, which was very positive,” he said.
“It has also been wonderful to see players like Bernal and Gavi return from injury. That mentality is exactly what I want from my players.
“Champions never stop being champions.”
Flick Already Looking Ahead to Next Season
Although attention will now shift towards the upcoming World Cup and the summer break, Flick made it clear that preparations for next season are already firmly on his mind.
The German warned his players that the demands next season will be even greater and stressed the importance of maintaining complete focus once pre-season begins.
“The World Cup is a huge event and naturally the players are focused on it,” Flick said.
“But next season will be even more difficult, and I want everyone to return fully committed and completely focused.”
“For now, the players can either go to the World Cup or enjoy their holidays and rest, but what matters most is Barcelona. Once we return, our journey continues, and I expect 100 per cent commitment from everybody.”
Flick also emphasised that he personally remains highly motivated ahead of the new campaign.
“I am ready because I still have that hunger,” he added.
“I want the players and the staff to show the same level of commitment and give everything possible for this badge.”
Emotional Farewell for Lewandowski
The match also carried emotional significance as Robert Lewandowski brought his Barcelona career to an end by scoring his final goal for the club.
Flick paid warm tribute to the Polish striker, praising both his professionalism and his remarkable instinct in front of goal.
“Of course he deserved the opportunity to say goodbye on the pitch,” Flick said.
“He always knows where to position himself, and that is exactly why he has scored so many goals throughout his career.”
Flick Backs Bernal to Become Key Figure
Before concluding his press conference, Flick reserved special praise for Marc Bernal, a player he has consistently highlighted as one of Barcelona’s brightest young talents.
The manager believes the midfielder possesses the mentality required to thrive at the club and expects him to take another major step forward next season.
“He has the mentality that Barcelona need,” Flick concluded.
“He is ready, and next season he must continue progressing and take another step forward.”
