Germany have been placed in Group E alongside Ecuador, Ivory Coast and Curaçao for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Germany Draw Ecuador, Ivory Coast and Curaçao in World Cup Group E
Germany previously faced Ecuador at the 2006 World Cup on home soil, securing a 3–0 victory in Berlin with Bayern Munich alumni Miroslav Klose (twice) and Lukas Podolski on the scoresheet. The two sides also met in a 2013 friendly, which Germany won 4–2, with Podolski and Lars Bender both scoring braces.
Germany’s record against Ivory Coast is similarly limited. The nations have met only once — a 2–2 friendly draw in 2009. Podolski struck twice on that occasion, including a last-minute penalty. Interestingly, Germany had initially been scheduled to play Ivory Coast in a friendly ahead of the World Cup, meaning the DFB will now have to secure a new opponent following the draw.
The fixture against Curaçao will be a historic first meeting between the two countries.
Although Group E is unlikely to be labelled the toughest of the tournament, Germany would be wise to avoid the complacency that proved costly in 2018. Should Julian Nagelsmann instil the same blend of intensity and composure that defined their Euro 2024 campaign, Die Mannschaft should fancy their chances of progressing to the knockout stages.
Germany will begin their World Cup journey against Curaçao on 14 June, followed by a clash with Ivory Coast on 20 June. They will conclude their group campaign against Ecuador on 25 June. The exact kick-off times and venues will be confirmed in due course.
