Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany has thrown his full support behind former club legend Thomas Müller and the Vancouver Whitecaps as they prepare to contest the MLS Cup final against Inter Miami and Lionel Messi.
Kompany Backs Vancouver Whitecaps and Müller Ahead of MLS Cup Final Against Inter Miami
Müller, who brought an emotional end to his 25-year spell at Bayern earlier this year, stunned many by opting for a move to Major League Soccer — and specifically to Canada. Joining the Vancouver Whitecaps, a club not traditionally regarded as one of the league’s heavyweights, the 35-year-old has reignited both his own career and the team’s fortunes.
Since Müller’s arrival, the Whitecaps have surged to unprecedented heights, producing a club-record campaign, climbing to second place in the Western Conference at the time of writing, and reaching the MLS Cup final for the first time in their history. Not a bad return, critics might say, for someone some had prematurely labelled a “has-been”.
Despite the move abroad, Müller has lost neither his charisma nor his trademark sense of humour. Speaking during a media session shared on his YouTube channel ahead of the final, the two-time UEFA Champions League winner highlighted the significance of the occasion, jokingly declaring:
“It’s the only upcoming final, so this final is the most important thing in my life.”
Leaning back with a grin, he teased reporters: “That was a good line, right?”
His former club are just as invested. Back in Munich, Bayern’s players — and particularly their manager — will be following events closely. At his pre-match press conference ahead of Bayern’s Bundesliga fixture against VfB Stuttgart, Kompany expressed heartfelt support for his former colleague.
“We wish Thomas the win — all of Munich will be supporting Vancouver,” he said, as reported by @iMiaSanMia.
“You still get the feeling that Thomas is with us. We’ve followed everything. It’s typical of Thomas to choose a club in Canada and immediately take them to a final. It’s not luck — these things just happen to Thomas.”
With both Vancouver and Munich firmly behind him, Müller heads into Saturday’s final with all the momentum and goodwill one could ask for. The stage is set for a compelling showdown: Müller and Vancouver chasing a historic triumph, while Messi’s Inter Miami seek to cement their own rising legacy.
Whatever the outcome, one thing is certain — Thomas Müller continues to prove that his winning mentality travels wherever he goes.
