Real Madrid concluded their 2025/26 campaign with an entertaining 4-2 victory over Athletic Club at the Santiago Bernabéu, securing second place in La Liga behind Barcelona with 86 points.

However, the result itself was overshadowed by an emotional occasion, as it marked the final appearance of Dani Carvajal in a Real Madrid shirt.

The veteran right-back, who joined the club’s academy as a youngster before rising through the ranks to become captain, is set to depart this summer upon the expiration of his contract, bringing an end to an extraordinary 23-year association with the Spanish giants.

Having battled back from a serious knee injury last season that threatened his career, Carvajal’s farewell became even more emotional as he addressed the supporters on the pitch after the match.

Carvajal Pays Tribute to Real Madrid Fans and Club

Speaking emotionally to the Madridistas inside the Bernabéu, Carvajal expressed his gratitude to everyone who stood by him during the most difficult period of his career.

“Good evening, Madridistas. This is not an easy moment for me to speak because I am overwhelmed with emotion during this wonderful farewell,” Carvajal said.

“First of all, I want to thank our president, Don Florentino. He was the one who brought me back from Germany and together we won many Champions League titles.

“But if there is one thing I will always remember, it is that less than 24 hours after my knee injury, he did not hesitate to renew my contract.”

The defender also paid tribute to his teammates, acknowledging the challenges the club had faced in recent seasons while maintaining confidence that Real Madrid would soon return to the summit once again.

“I also want to thank my teammates. These past two seasons have not been easy, but I am certain we will win again. This is Real Madrid, and our history teaches us to always rise again.”

Reflecting on a Golden Era

Carvajal also took time to reflect on the unforgettable era of success he experienced at the club, describing it as a privilege to have been part of one of the greatest periods in Real Madrid’s history.

“I cannot help but remember the golden era we experienced together. We brought a magnificent period to a close — four Champions League titles in five years, La Décima, three consecutive Champions League triumphs, Cristiano, Ramos, Ancelotti and Zidane.

“There are countless names that honoured this badge. They made us great and took us to the very top.”

“I Have Enjoyed It Like a Child”

Later, speaking to RMTV, Carvajal admitted he found it difficult to fully express the emotions he felt throughout the evening.

“It is very difficult to describe. The emotions come naturally without even realising it. Yesterday at the training ground, today seeing the tifo they prepared for me, hearing the ovations from the fans… how could I not become emotional?” he said.

“I am closing a wonderful chapter and an unimaginable career. I have nothing but gratitude towards the club and the supporters.

“Thank you all. I have enjoyed every moment like a child, from the very first day to the last. I hope the feeling has been mutual. I hope to return one day to what will always be my home, in a different role, but still helping the club as always.”

“Real Madrid Is My Life”

When asked to reflect on his remarkable journey with the club, Carvajal admitted he could never have imagined such success as a child.

“If someone had told me as a child that I would have this career, I would never have believed it. It has been spectacular from the first day until the last.

“There have been triumphs, difficult moments that helped me mature, and the privilege of sharing a dressing room with wonderful people. This is the greatest club in the world.”

Carvajal also revealed that throughout his career, he always tried to treat everyone with respect and hoped supporters would remember him fondly.

“I have always tried to be kind to everyone, even when I became frustrated after making mistakes or misplacing passes. I hope people remember Dani Carvajal positively. Hopefully, we will meet again in the future.”

In the end, one sentence perfectly summed up his lifelong bond with the club.

“It’s not the club of my life — it’s my life. I was born a Madridista, I have spent 23 years here, progressed through every category, won everything possible and become captain. I could not ask for anything more. I leave feeling happy and fulfilled.”
