Arsenal are expected to receive an automatic fine from the Football Association (FA) following their heated Premier League encounter with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
Arsenal Set for FA Fine After Fiery Chelsea Clash at Stamford Bridge
Mikel Merino’s header shortly before the hour mark cancelled out Trevoh Chalobah’s early second-half opener, as the London rivals battled to a hard-fought 1-1 draw on Sunday. The result keeps Premier League leaders Arsenal five points ahead of Manchester City, with Chelsea a further point back in third place.
The match was notably tense, with referee Anthony Taylor issuing seven yellow cards in total. Taylor overturned an initial booking for Moisés Caicedo after a VAR review, before sending off the Chelsea midfielder for serious foul play following a dangerous challenge on Merino.
Marc Cucurella was the only other Chelsea player cautioned during the match, while the remaining six yellow cards were all shown to Arsenal.
Martin Zubimendi went into the book after just five minutes, followed by defenders Cristhian Mosquera, Riccardo Calafiori and Piero Hincapié. Half-time substitute Myles Lewis-Skelly — who replaced Calafiori — received a booking less than 10 minutes after coming on. Striker Viktor Gyökeres, returning from a hamstring injury, was also shown a yellow card for sliding into goalkeeper Robert Sánchez after replacing Eberechi Eze.
Under FA regulations, any club accumulating six or more yellow cards in a single fixture automatically receives a £25,000 fine, meaning Arsenal will be sanctioned for their disciplinary tally.
Chelsea’s ongoing disciplinary issues were once again on show, as Caicedo picked up his first career red card in 130 Premier League appearances. Although it was his first dismissal for the Blues, it adds to a wider trend under manager Enzo Maresca. Chelsea have now recorded four red cards in 13 league matches this season, and seven in 20 games across all competitions.
The club sit bottom of the Premier League’s Fair Play table, having finished 19th last season.
