American actor Leonardo DiCaprio has received backlash from Brazilians and their government led by Jair Bolsonaro, following comments he maid to the Brazilian people telling them to vote for an “Eco Friendly Politician who would save rather than destroy the Amazon Rain Forest”.

The Titanic and Wolf of Wall Street star is a public conservationist, donating millions to causes aimed at replanting trees and saving animal species nearing extinction.

Bolsonaro, who has been criticized for promoting the destruction of large portions of the Amazon to make way for mines, urban expansion, and farms has called out DiCaprio stating: “Americans shall not interfere in Brazilian elections”. 

Many ordinary Brazilians have also criticized DiCaprio, with some stating that: "Leonardo means well, but he is not a Brazilian.

We don't interfere in his elections, so why should he interfere in ours?"
