How Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon Became One Of The Best Games In The Franchise

Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon (Often just called Blood Dragon), is considered one of the best video games of the modern era.

Debuting on April 30th 2013, the game takes place in an alternate 2007 where a rouge army of military cyborgs is trying to take over the world after Vietnam War II and WW3.

You play as Rex Power Colt (Voiced by Kyle Reese and Corporal Hicks himself Michael Beihn), a man who turns into a Mark IV Cyborg after being killed in battle.

You are tasked with taking down Omega Force led by the rogue Colonel Ike Sloan (Voiced by Danny Blanco Hall of My Trust fame), A Mark V Cyborg who turned on the American government after hearing that they were going to end the Cold War.

Along the way you can find secrets, collect VHS tapes, save scientists, and take on living fossil like creatures called Blood Dragons.

The games original score was done masterfully by synth band Power Glove, with the licensed soundtrack comprising of songs by Dragon Sound, Little Richard, Frank Harris, Vince DiCola, and Stan Bush.

Many Far Cry fans consider Blood Dragon the best in the series for three reasons: It's 1980's aesthetic, it branched off from the main Far Cry setting, and the developers had near free reign to do what they wanted with little to no objections from Ubisoft.

The deliberately cheesy one liners Rex says throughout the game is bound to result in players laughing, and the story (Presented in NES and SNES style cut-scenes) is sure to engage players as they explore the island Rex with his side kick T.T. Spider Brown and love interest Dr Elizabeth Darling who survived the nuking of Canada.

The DLC is one giant homage to 70's and 80's action and sci-fi, with references to Star Wars, G.I. Joe, The Terminator, Robocop, Commando, Predator, Apocalypse Now, Die Hard, Escape From New York, Karate Kid, Miami Connection, and many others.

It's popularity has led it to sell just under 2 Million copies since it's release, making Blood Dragon one of the best selling DLCs off all time.

The 2021 Remaster featured as apart of the latest installment, Far Cry 6, was panned by fans and critics because Ubisoft had taken the charm out of Blood Dragon.

So what can be learned is that: “If it ain't broke, don't fix it”.
