Manchester United legend Ruud van Nistelrooy has spoken for the first time following his appointment as the new manager of Leicester City.

The 48-year-old, who recently departed Manchester United after a brief but successful stint as interim head coach, has succeeded Steve Cooper at the King Power Stadium. Leicester City officially announced Van Nistelrooy's appointment on Friday evening at 7pm, ahead of their upcoming Premier League fixture against Brentford.

Despite his appointment, Van Nistelrooy will not take charge of Leicester's match against Brentford, with caretaker manager Ben Dawson handling the team for Saturday’s game. This means the Dutchman’s first Premier League match as Leicester’s permanent manager will be at home against West Ham on Tuesday.

A reunion with his former club, Manchester United, is set to take place later in the season, with Leicester hosting the Red Devils on 15th March 2025.

Speaking about his new role, Van Nistelrooy expressed his excitement and determination in an interview with Leicester City’s official website:

"I’m proud, I’m excited. Everyone I speak to about Leicester City Football Club is enthusiastic. They have great stories about the quality of the people working at the club, the supporters, and, of course, the recent history of the club is impressive. I’m excited to start, get to know everyone, and give everything I can for the football club."

The Dutchman emphasised the importance of connecting with the club and its community:

"I can’t wait to find out what it means to be part of this club. As a manager, it’s a big responsibility, and I take it very seriously. Building relationships with everyone—within the club and the community—can make us a really strong movement to move forward and achieve results. The leadership structures are solid, the squad has a fantastic mix of young emerging talents and experienced players, and I can’t wait to get started on the pitch with them."

Leicester City chairman Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha welcomed Van Nistelrooy, expressing optimism about the future under his leadership:

"It is my pleasure to welcome Ruud to Leicester City. He joins a club with a rich history, passionate supporters, and a talented squad. We are excited to see the impact he can have as we embark on this new chapter together. Ruud’s experience, knowledge, and winning mentality will undoubtedly bring great value to us, and we look forward to supporting him in achieving success for our fans and our club."

Van Nistelrooy’s primary task will be to guide Leicester away from the threat of relegation. Steve Cooper’s dismissal followed a poor run of form, including four defeats in five matches, culminating in a 2-1 loss to Chelsea last weekend. Despite these struggles, Leicester currently sit 16th in the Premier League table, two points clear of the relegation zone.

The new manager’s arrival signals a fresh start for the Foxes as they seek stability and resurgence under Van Nistelrooy’s leadership.
