The Jiu Jitsu Champion Was Declared Brain Dead By Doctors In Sao Palo After He Was The Victim Of A Club Shooting

The Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Champion, Leandro Pereira do Nascimento Lo, has died at the age of 33 after being the victim of a mass shooting at a nightclub in his native Sao Paulo.

Lo competed for his home country in the Jiu Jitsu World Cup, Pan-American Jiu Jitsu Championships, Copa Podio, and the Brazilian National Jiu Jitsu Championship.

He held a two year long winning streak at the Copa Podio between 2011 and 2013, before establishing his own Jiu Jitsu school called NS Brotherhood in 2015.

The eight time world champion and his friends were approached by a drunk man waiving a bottle near the Jiu Jitsu star, who despite Lo's best efforts to disarm him, was able to shoot the martial artist in the head and take shots at other patrons before he was arrested by local authorities.

Doctors were forced to terminate his life support, after he became brain dead due to the bullet in his head.

The International Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation called Lo: "An example of a true black belt, martial artist, and champion both on and off the mats.

He was one of the greatest athletes our sport has ever produced, he will be missed by us, his family, and those who stepped up to Lo on the mats".

The shooter, an off duty military officer named Henrique Otavio Oliveira Velozo, has been charged with murder and attempted murder in a Sao Paulo court according to local sources.

The death of Leandro Lo has seen the largest public mourning for a Brazilian sports personality since 1994, when fellow Sao Paulo native and F1 icon Ayrton Senna was killed after crashing at the San Marino Grand Prix.

With fans taking to the streets of Sao Paulo to mourn the loss of yet another one of the city's sporting champions.
