Russian special forces and Donetsk Peoples Republic (DPR) forces have been reported storming the city, combing the ruins for survivors, be it civilian or military.
Denis Pushilin, the leader of the DPR, has called this: “The fall of the Nazi forces in Mariupol killing our people, the city is now ours”.
It seems even they are oblivious to the fact that the only Russian civilians killed in Ukraine were by the Russians themselves.
Ukraine reports that they have yet to reach the disused steel mill where the majority of Ukrainian army personnel are making their last stand, Putin and Pushilin's forces aren't taking any chances after Ukrainian snipers were spotted in the husks of tower blocks.
Mariupol is still home to 100,000 civilians, ¼ of the population before the war began in February.
It is unknown if the Russian and DPR forces on the ground have been issued “Kill or Capture” orders regarding the civilians and/or the Ukrainian servicemen, many fear that many civilians that remain will be massacred in order to find any hiding Ukrainian soldiers (Real or Perceived).
If this is truly the fall of Mariupol, then it means the Ukrainians will have lost their last port in the Donbas and gave Russia it's Siberian Land Bridge from Crimea to the DPR.
Two major moral blows to Ukraine.
Ukrainian
president Volodymyr Zelensky told Putin and Pushilin: “If any of my
servicemen are killed, then peace negotiations are out of the
question”.
